TAYLORSVILLE — On paper the Weber Warriors were underdogs in their first-round 5A state tournament game against the top-seeded Bengals, but not in the way it mattered most — the hearts and minds of the players

"We believed we could do it the whole time," said sophomore point guard Desiree Young after the fifth-seeded Warriors upset Brighton 39-36 Monday night at Salt Lake Community College. "We have a tough region…We've been in tons of these kinds of situations."

The win is the first playoff victory for the Warriors in many years

"I think it's been about nine years since we won a first-round playoff game," said Weber head coach Lisa Dalebout. "This is a huge win for our program."

The Warriors overcame a two-point performance in the second quarter by holding the Bengals to two points in the third quarter. The rebounding of Shay Sorensen and leadership of Young was key in helping the Warriors come back in the second half

Sorensen earned 13 points and 15 rebounds, as well as three assists. Young earned seven points, but ran theWarrior offense with the poise of a veteran

"She played a really good game tonight," said Dalebout of Young. "Shay did a beautiful jobrebounding for us. It wasn't always pretty, but we did what it took to win."

Katie Wahlen also played well for the Warriors with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists

The Bengals were led by Katie Tominaga, who scored 13 points and had three steals, as well as, Kylie Hirschi, who added nine points and six rebounds. Rachel Page played well, especially in the second half, with six points, five steals and eight rebounds

"They are a good team," said Dalebout. "He's a good coach and that makes it even nicer that we could earn a win against a good team." Dalebout said the young Warriors have gotten better every game, in large part because of the quality of the teams in Region 1.

"Top to bottom it's a dog fight every night," Dalebout said. "Everyone was tough, and I dothink it helped prepare us for this." The win means Weber will face either Bingham or Layton in the quarterfinals at 4:10 p.m. Thursday
