Real intimacy goes beyond one valentine a year

Incorporate more nonsexual touch. Laura Brotherson, author of "And They Were Not Ashamed," shares the following: "Physical intimacy in marriage is touch, closeness and the electromagnetic energy of … sexual contact with each other …[However] nonsexual touch and affection can and should account for a larger portion of the physical intimacy shared between husband and wife."
She also shared that both men and women feel the desire for more touch.
If your husband has forgotten or is uncomfortable, take his hand while he's driving, or reach up and rub the back of his neck.
Often women have shared with me the concern that a little touch often goes straight to a specific conclusion, so therefore, they just don't.
I would encourage couples to try Brotherson's suggestion to actually designate one evening as a "no sex" night where you both agree to enjoy holding hands, rubbing backs, or other just plain touching without it reaching a particular destination.
Lastly, communicate your needs specifically.
Intimacy is a journey, and the needs and feelings will change with situation and age, from being on a honeymoon to becoming empty nesters.
Communication requires delicacy so that your partner doesn't feel that requests or needs are a signal of deficiency.
Share one or two thoughts with each other and you will likely discover much better, more tailored ones.
The fruits of the discussion will likely, and hopefully, be more lasting than a cardboard valentine.
