You keep printing letters from people upset about the prospect of 10-digit dialing without a proper explanation of reasoning behind the need for the change. The telecommunications industry has three choices:
Do nothing and run out of numbers in the 801 area code.
Impose a geographical area code split that requires every business in the area with the new prefix to reprint all their business related material.
Impose an overlay that allows new numbers to be assigned without any cost to existing businesses and users, no changes to existing directories and no need to notify all your friends of the new prefix. The only direct effect is to require 10-digit dialing.
