Wasatch Elementary's Pioneer Song

— to the tune of "Oh, Susannah"

In the dark of night we're sleeping tight

In the morning we awake

And we start our journey to new lands

A new life we will make.

We are starting on a sunny day

Getting ready for the trail

We brought a handkerchief or two

And some extra shoes as well.

Moving Westward! Don't you cry for me

We are going to a Promised Land

To live in harmony.

Our wagons roll across the plains

Far as the eye can see

We'll eat some berries and some bread

And help our families.

We'll sing our songs all night long

While sitting by the fire

We'll think about our mountain home

And watch the moon go higher.

Chorus

The wagons roll, it's getting cold

But we can make it through

We'll say a prayer, soon we'll be there

We made it — yell "WOOO HOO!"

Chorus

Westward ho, the way we go

We'll take our time, we're very slow.

Over rivers, over mountains

We'll make our way through rain and snow.

The way is rocky as we go,

We'll sing our song, Westward ho.

We'll cross the plains, we'll work hard.

We'll walk with courage, we'll watch and guard.

We're getting tired, but we know what's right.

We'll walk with courage, day and night.

We'll settle here, we found the place.

We'll sing songs, we'll dance with grace.

We'll play some games, we'll run a race.

We'll settle down in this new place.

— by Emma Anderson

Crossing the plains was very hard

Some needed canes and some worked hard.

As we pushed onward

Through the cold winter months

There was not much food

But what we had did us good.

Our clothes were rugged and torn

No matter what was worn

We were here to stay.
