Abbie Froerer Platt had already interned for Democratic Utah congressman Bill Orton and was working on a master's degree in public policy at Brigham Young University when she made the decision to steer clear of politics.

With two college degrees and an LDS mission to Arizona behind her, Platt graduated from BYU and went into business with a friend. But then a few things happened, and on Jan. 20, she was feeling the sting of the cold, early morning air from the inaugural platform on the west side of the Capitol before dashing back inside to get back to work as the Capitol coordinator for the inauguration committee.

Platt had taken a part-time job with Utah Sen. Bob Bennett in Provo "for a little distraction" in 2001. That became a full-time job as a constituent services liaison, which prefaced a 6. a.m. phone call fro Bennett's chief of staff summoning her to Washington. Before Platt was fully awake, she had agreed to take the job as the finance director for the senator's re-election campaign. She was definitely not steering clear of politics.
