Math program scaled back to save money

As requested by state education leaders, Sen. Stephenson, R-Draper, has pared back his math bill so it is less extensive and less expensive.

SB159 is still headed for debate on the Senate floor.

The bill includes Singapore Math — a method that teaches students core concepts by repetition, then moves on to solving problems by applying that knowledge. It is extremely visual and involves word problems.

One major change is Stephenson has removed the "Math for America" segment of his bill which would have been for secondary schools.

"We will start out somewhat smaller," he said.

The bill's fiscal note is now a half million. The original price tag was $1.7 million.
