Not a day goes by that I don't hear Spanish spoken around me, whether it's in person, on the TV or on the radio.

The problem is, I know only a couple of words of Spanish.

But Salt Lake disc jockey Frankie "C" (Corrigan) has written a new children's book designed to make learning Spanish fun.

The book, titled "El Gato" (CMS Publishing, $12.99) gives kids — or adults — a good understanding of almost four dozen essential Spanish words.

It features dozens of illustrations by Rick Menard and stresses both phonetic and meaning.

Frankie C has worked in radio for 18 years, including more than 11 years on KZHT's "Z-Morning Zoo" show.

He said the book's title was inspired by a real cat that lives at a resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He's also fascinated with the Latino culture and said he would have loved to have had such an easy-to-learn book around when he was young.

Portions of proceeds from the book will go to animal shelters that have a no-kill policy.

ANOTHER SPANISH STATION: The conversion of FM-105.7 late last month from country music to Spanish music means the Salt Lake radio market has at least seven stations broadcasting in Spanish.

Those seven Spanish stations represent about 11.1 percent of the total stations in the Salt Lake market. Arbitron, which compiles radio ratings, estimates the local Spanish-speaking population is 11.9 percent, so the market is almost in line with the total population.

"Fisher and Peggy," mornings on KOSY, have a "Knight in Shining Armor" Valentine's contest under way, To enter, send the DJs a valentine from the station's Web site at www.kosy.com.

KBZN has a "sweet deal for Valentine's" promotion going on, with a stay at the Grand America and other perks as the prize.

Many Utah Jazz basketball games are being broadcast on KBEE, FM-98.7, again this year.

The seventh annual "K-Bull" radiothon raised $470,000 for cancer research through the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

TEN YEARS AGO IN SALT LAKE RADIO: KSFI leads the radio rankings. … "Grant and Amanda" is the No. 1 morning show.
