BACKYARD BIRD COUNT
The Great Backyard Bird Count will be held Friday through Sunday.
Last year, Utah birders reported 163 species on 481 checklists. The Layton, Wild Bird Center (www.wildbird.com/layton) is a sponsor and participant in the Great Backyard Bird Count.
You can count anywhere: in your backyard, local park, favorite birding spot, wherever. You can submit checklists for as many locations as you want and can submit a new checklist for each location each day. The more checklists submitted, the more useful the data is for mapping bird abundance and distribution through time.
A recommended bird guide to help with bird identification for those who are at a beginning level is the Backyard Birds of Utah by Utah author, Bill Fenimore (www.gibbs-smith.com).
Participation in this citizen science project is free and the data collected enhances our knowledge of birds and trends within those species populations. Report your bird sightings during the count to www.birdcount.org.
BIRD WALK FOR 'TWEET HEARTS'
The Wild Bird Center will lead a free bird walk to Farmington Bay to view Bald Eagles on Utah's Eagle Day, which is Saturday.
Participants will car caravan from the Layton Wild Bird Center at 10 a.m. The walks are designed for birders at all levels, especially families.
Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars. The Wild Bird Center is located at the Layton Market Center, 1860 N. 1000 West, across from Barnes & Noble.

'STOKED ON SOCKS'
Powder Mountain ski resort will hold a "Stoked on Socks" day on Feb. 26. Those skiers and snowboarders who bring a package of new socks will receive a $16 discount toward an all access day pass.
This is an opportunity to help the homeless by donating what they want most — new socks.
Stoked on Socks, a nonprofit organization founded by former professional snowboarder Mitch Nelson, will be at the Timberline Lodge at Powder Mountain to collect the donations.
