Check out 'Fireproof,' '2012' documentary

Here are a pair of DVDs worth checking out: a Christian drama and a documentary about the possible end of the world.

"Fireproof" (Sony, 2008, PG, $28.95). This independently produced Christian film (by the folks who did "Facing the Giants") stars Kirk Cameron as a firefighter whose devotion to the job of saving others has left him angry and frustrated, leading to a deterioration of his relationship with his wife (Erin Bethea). He's also begun surfing the Web for pornography. Having had enough, his wife announces she wants a divorce.

So, his father steps in and urges him to try mending the marriage by taking "The Love Dare," which entails performing daily acts of kindness for his wife (each accompanied by a scripture). He begins with reluctance and his wife doubts his sincerity, and she is also being wooed by a co-worker. Is it too late?

The film suffers from uneven acting in some supporting roles as well as some wrong-headed comic relief, and at a full two hours it's a half-hour too long. But there is a compelling message here about working to save your marriage instead of simply giving up and moving on. And about the importance of striving to become a more thoughtful and less selfish person yourself.

Despite the obvious cinematic flaws, my wife and I were caught up in this as we watched it together, and it spurred some stimulating conversation afterward.

"2012: Science or Superstition" (Disinformation, 2009, $19.95). Will the year 2012 mark the end of civilization as we know it? Or a renewal of the Earth? That's the debate among many who explore the ancient Mayan calendar, and a number of scientists also weigh in for this documentary on the subject. (A feature film starring John Cusack is also scheduled for release later this year.)
