BYU women's basketball: Cougars looking to end loss skid

Published: Saturday, Jan. 31 2009 12:00 a.m. MST

Having lost three of its last four games, including two in a row, the BYU women's basketball team is looking to get back to winning.

The Cougars (13-5, 3-3) hope that comes today when they visit Wyoming (10-9, 2-4).

BYU, which finds itself in the middle of the Mountain West Conference pack, fell at home last Wednesday to league-leading Utah, 63-55. The Cougars shot just 33 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by the Utes.

Despite the loss, Judkins said his team isn't far behind the league's elite teams.

"We know right now that we're right there with everybody," he said. "We were close to New Mexico, we were close to (Utah). We just have to go out and do it. Take care of business. Now we have a big game at Wyoming."

Judkins is optimistic because BYU has played better away from Provo than it has at home this season.

"This team is really confident on the road," Judkins said.

The Cowgirls are coming off a 52-41 win at Air Force last Wednesday as freshman Kristen Scheffler scored a career-high 21 points.

Scheffler (11.2 ppg) is one of four Wyoming players scoring in double-figures, along with Megan McGuffey (11.3 ppg), Hillary Carlson (10.9 ppg) and Emma Langford (10.2). Carlson is averaging 17 points per contest in MWC play.

Hawaii 52, USU 43

At Logan, Megan Tinnin's layup with 17.5 seconds left proved to be the game winner for Hawaii, as the Aggies had two shots in the waning seconds rattle off the iron.

USU was going for its first four-game win streak in 28 years, but Hawaii avenged its loss to the Aggies last Saturday.

The defeat drops USU to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, while UH won its first league game.

Senior guard Danyelle Snelgro led USU with 16 points, as well as tying game-bests with six assists and four steals, while fellow guard Ana Pares tossed in 10 points.
