It is most gratifying to see that our state transportation department is studying the advisability of increasing speed limits on Utah freeways. Studies have shown that changing speed limit signs does not affect the speed of traffic. Motorists drive at speeds they consider comfortable and safe regardless of posted speed limits — as already shown by UDOT's report that speed on I-15 is 80-83 mph in spite of the 75 mph signs.
It is expected that the UDOT study will show that the actual speed of traffic in the test sections will remain very close to the presently observed speeds. This would allow posting 80 mph along I-15 and would shut down speed traps presently operating in this area.
