W. Jordan resident dies in accident

West Jordan resident James Lowe, 66, died Tuesday afternoon in a three-car traffic accident on Highland Drive, police said.

"About six witnesses said they saw him swerving in and out of his lane of travel before finally swerving into oncoming traffic after crossing the median," Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson said.

Lowe's sedan was traveling northbound on Highland Drive in front of Cottonwood Mall at 3:30 p.m. when it crossed the median and hit a sport utility vehicle carrying one adult and five children, Hutson said. "The impact of that first head-on collision then spun the Suzuki into the other oncoming lane where another SUV hit the man's driver's side broadside," Hutson said.

Although Hutson said Lowe "sustained traumatic injuries" severe enough to cause his death, he said it's a possibility the man may have died before his car hit the two vehicles.

When the man's wife showed up at the accident, she told officers he "suffers from diabetes." Hutson said.

All six people in the first SUV were taken to two nearby hospitals as a precaution. All three people in the second SUV, one adult and two children, were treated at the scene.
