Amy's new organic cakes are as delicious as if homemade
Supermarket Sampler
Amy's Organic Cakes. Orange, and Chocolate. $3.89 to $4.49 per 11-ounce cake.
Bonnie: It's worth hunting down Amy's new cakes in the freezer section of your supermarket — or making a special trip to a natural foods market to get them. They're as moist and delicious as homemade. They're also organic, vegan and contain no dairy.
A hefty slice of either serves up about 175 calories, 6 grams of fat (of which none is saturated) and about 16 grams of sugar, which is quite modest for something so tasty.
Carolyn: Food companies enter into different parts of the supermarket at considerable trouble and expense. Smart companies don't do it for anything less than a superior product. And Amy's Kitchen is definitely a smart company. Its first frozen cakes will be worth the trouble they may be to find. These breakfast bread-like loaves are not just delicious, they're also unusual, particularly the orange flavor.
These cakes are ideal to serve to company along with tea or coffee — though it's unlikely they'll think you were able to whip up anything this good. Given the telltale brown fleur-de-lis paper liner, they'll more likely assume you bought it at an expensive bakery, which, let's face it, in this day and age, is just as good.
Sara Lee Fresh Ideas Deli Meats. Garlic Herb Chicken, and Hickory Smoked Ham. $4.49 to $4.99 per 10-ounce resealable package.
Bonnie: Sara Lee now offers thinly sliced ham and chicken ready to use for sandwiches in resealable (and reusable) tubs. Two ounces of either of these new varieties contain 50 to 60 calories, 0.5 to 1.5 grams of fat and about 625 milligrams of sodium, or about average for lean luncheon meat.
I prefer the taste of the Hickory Smoked Ham to the Garlic Herb Chicken, as I'd rather add fresh garlic to what I'm eating. Use either on whole-grain bread for a low-fat, healthful sandwich.
Carolyn: Garlic Herb Chicken and Hickory Smoked Ham are the two latest additions to the high-end, thin-sliced Fresh Ideas packaged deli meat line that Sara Lee launched in early 2007 to complement its Hillshire Farm Deli Select offerings.
The Garlic Herb Chicken is by far the more interesting and innovative. The garlic adds depth and flavor to the always-bland chicken, and none of Sara Lee's competitors offer anything like it.
By contrast, almost every maker of luncheon meat offers a smoked ham. But Sara Lee's has a nice flavor and the authentic hearty texture of real ham — not the slimy texture of a cheaper, more processed brand.
Mazola Vegetable Plus! $4.77 per 32-ounce, $5.25 per 40-ounce, $6.29 per 48-ounce, $10.89 per 96-ounce container, and $16.08 per 1-gallon container.
