Sundance stars tuned into Obama
PARK CITY — If there's one thing this week that can eclipse the Sundance Film Festival movie buzz among celebrities up and down Main Street, it's the inauguration of the country's rising star, President-elect Barack Obama.
OK, not everyone was exactly buzzing.
There was no pinning actor Jim Carrey down Monday after a meal at the Purple Sage on what he thinks about Obama or the swearing-in.
"I wish the world well," said Carrey, who stars with Ewan McGregor in "I Love You Phillip Morris."
Actor Tommy Davidson's festival film "Black Dynamite" was picked up Monday morning by Sony. Davidson's good cinematic fortune wasn't the only thing that had him crackling with excitement. He had plenty to say about the country's first black president.
"I think it's a good thing. It's a good thing for America. I'm glad white America trusts an African-American" as commander-in-chief, Davidson said.
"I think the black community needs to remember that he's not a civil rights leader," he added. "We still need to do what we need to do to try to move our people toward global economic equality. Because we're still considered Third World."
Davidson, famous for his role in the TV show "In Living Color," said Obama has a chance to finish what previous presidents said they were going to do for the black community, namely with arts, athletics, education and housing for the country's impoverished minority population.
"Now, he's African-American, but he's the president of the United States," Davidson said. "So, that doesn't necessarily mean he has to do these things, but it sure would be neat."
With the exception of Carrey, most celebs had an opinion about Obama.
Ralph "Karate Kid" Macchio has children, age 13 and 16, who are just as riveted to Tuesday's historic happening as their famous father.
"It's just creating a whole energy across the generations," Macchio said. "I don't remember ever at that age being locked in to an inauguration. It was like, OK, next president, what do I get out of it?"
Plain White T's singer Tom Higgenson voted for Obama. "So, I'm happy," Higgenson said.
His band, famous for the song "Hey There Delilah," was touring on Election Day but he was tuned in to the unfolding results. "It was amazing," Higgenson said. "You knew that history was happening right there before your eyes."
Scottish actor Alan Cumming was headed to Washington Monday to attend the inauguration.
"I'm excited," Cumming said Sunday. "I was a big Barack supporter. I just think it's such a great thing for America and the world."
McGregor will also be watching Obama being sworn in.
"It's so exciting," said McGregor, who is also from Scotland. "I'm looking forward to seeing it. My kids are all excited about it and their school — it's really good, it's really great."
Access Hollywood's Billy Bush wouldn't say who he voted for, but said he was brought up to respect and support whoever is president.
Hmmm, his last name is Bush, he's related and he wouldn't say who he picked.
Activist/actor/author Annabelle Gurwitch was quick to grade Bush with an "F" for his efforts to be a little more cozy with Mother Earth. As for Obama, she's hopeful he'll be able to reverse the "damage" done by Bush.
