ACADEMICS: The Western Athletic Conference announced its fall all-academic teams on Friday and Utah State had 42 student-athletes recognized, marking the third straight year USU has led the conference in academic all-conference honorees from the fall sports of cross country, football, soccer and volleyball.
Utah State had two student-athletes earn academic all-conference honors for the fourth time in seniors Caroline Berry (cross country) and Otis Nelson (football).
TRACK & FIELD: Sophomore pole vaulter Sonia Grabowska's school and facility record highlighted a strong outing by the Aggies' track and field teams at the USU Wilson Motor Invitational meet Saturday at the USU Wilson Fieldhouse the Aggies' lone indoor home meet of the season.
Grabowska cleared the bar at 13 feet, 9 1/2 inches, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, as well as smashing the previous school and Nelson Fieldhouse record of 13-1/4 set by Kathryn Duhadway in 2006. The 13-9 1/2 currently ties her for the top mark in the NCAA this season with Katie Stripling of Arkansas. A native of Warsaw, Poland, Grabowska also qualifies for the European Under-23 Track and Field Championships, as well as tying for the second-best mark by a Polish pole vaulter, and her mark is now tied for the 15th-best in the world this season.
Eight of 13 women's events were won by Utah State, while on the men's side, the Aggies had seven winners in 12 events.
MEN'S TENNIS: The Aggies fell, 5-2, in their first home match of the season Saturday against Eastern Washington.
USU's two wins came from senior Mike Banks and freshman Jordan Barlow in singles action. Banks won at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, against EWU's David Pez, and Barlow won at No. 6 singles in a quick, 6-1, 6-1, match against the Eagles' Kevin Anderson.
The Aggies play at in-state rival Utah on Monday at 11 a.m.
