Obama's inauguration: Utah's Bennett to accompany Obama throughout Inauguration Day

Published: Sunday, Jan. 18 2009 12:10 a.m. MST

On Inauguration Day, Sen. Bob Bennett and his wife, Joyce, will never be far away from President Barack Obama — following and hosting him at key events throughout the day.

That's because Bennett, R-Utah, helped plan many of the events as a member of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and as the ranking Republican on the Senate Rules Committee.

Bennett's office released a list of some his responsibilities that day, which include close association with both the incoming and outgoing presidents.

His activities include:

• At the inauguration ceremony, Bennett will escort George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to their seats.

• Joyce Bennett will be among official escorts there for first lady Laura Bush and Lynne Cheney.

• At the ceremony, Bennett will introduce Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who will administer the vice presidential oath to Joe Biden.

• The Bennetts and other members of the congressional inauguration committee will join President Obama and Vice President Biden for the official sendoff of the Bushes and Cheneys.

• Both Bennetts will attend the presidential Inaugural Luncheon with the new president and vice president in the Capitol. Joyce Bennett was among a committee that chose the menu and the caterer.

• At the luncheon, Bennett will present Obama and Biden with the official photograph of the swearing-in ceremony.

• Both Bennetts will attend the Review of Troops with Obama and Biden.

• The Bennetts will join the presidential motorcade from the Capitol to the White House, where they will watch the inaugural parade with Obama and Biden from the viewing stand in front of the White House.
