BYU women's basketball: Cougars host Lobos in key matchup

PROVO — Two of three women's teams still unbeaten in Mountain West Conference play meet today (3 p.m.) in the Marriott Center as BYU hosts No. 25 New Mexico.

The Cougars (12-2, 2-0) are riding a 10-game winning streak after claiming an impressive 62-46 victory at TCU earlier this week. It marks their best winning streak since stringing together 15 straight victories in 1992-93.

BYU, UNM and Utah are the only MWC teams that have not lost a league game this season.

The Lobos (13-2, 2-0), who have won 10 of their last 11 games, are led by junior guard Amy Beggin, who is averaging 15.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Angela Hartill adds 12 points and 4.9 rebounds and Amanda Adamson is the squad's leading rebounder, averaging 6.8 boards per outing.

The Cougars enjoy balanced scoring with Shawnee Slade (11.9 ppg) and Mindy Nielson (11.5 ppg) leading the way. Coriann Wood contributes 8.4 points off the bench while center Cassie King averages 7.4 points and guard Jazmine Foreman averages 7.2.

BYU enjoys the advantage in the all-time series with New Mexico, 38-24, but the Cougars are only 6-12 against the Lobos under coach Jeff Judkins.

A year ago, UNM won two of three meetings against BYU, including a 55-45 win in Provo and a 59-41 triumph in the MWC Tournament quarterfinals. The Lobos went on win the tournament title.

Overall, New Mexico has won four of its last five games against the Cougars.
