Beutler eyes a bigger prize

Beutler pointed out that Snow Canyon probably tapered too many people for the region meet a year ago because the Warriors weren't quite sure about how tough it would be to qualify some swimmers for state, but don't expect that to be a problem this time around.

"This season," said Beutler, "I see us being a lot more focused toward state."

Springville has surged to the top of the projected heap since the start of the season, and Murray will once again be in the mix, but look for Beutler to do anything he can to help his team win — even if that means swimming the 200 IM instead of his usual 200 free.

"It's been our goal since Day 1," Beutler said of winning a state title. "I know for me, I've accomplished just about everything I can accomplish in high school swimming, but I feel there'll be a large part of it missing if I can't lead my team to a state championship because these guys are my best friends — they're practically family."

If Beutler does swim the 200 IM and not the 200 free, it would throw into doubt a potential head-to-head rematch against Mountain Crest star Jake Taylor. Those two squared off in a phenomenal 200 free race last winter, with Beutler edging Taylor over the last 25 yards.

Beutler knows how many people would love to see a head-to-head Beutler-Taylor rematch next month, but he said his focus will be on his team and not on the friendly rivalry.

"We've always raced against each other and pushed each other and had great races," said Beutler. "But when it comes down to it, I'm going to have to do whatever's best for my team and (what's) in our best interests of our team in winning state.

"So I'm going to have to put any individual rivalries on the back-burner."

Snow Canyon's Joe Beutler skipped a shot at Olympic qualifying in order to re-create his stroke and become even better as a senior this season.
