A Murray police officer has been arrested and booked into jail in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

Few details were released Monday about the arrest of detective Michael Spilman, who was booked into jail Friday for investigation of attempted sexual battery, forcible sex abuse and aggravated sexual assault, according to jail booking records.

Spilman's alleged crime happened in Salt Lake County, but he was booked into a jail outside of the county for his protection, as is standard procedure when law enforcers are arrested.

The alleged victim is a teenage girl.

Spilman joined the Murray Police Department in 1999. He was placed on paid leave pending both an internal investigation from the department and one from the West Valley Police Department which is investigating the case, said Murray police detective Kenny Bass.
