Fifty-six of the state's Title I (high-poverty) schools that have high academic performance levels are being recognized by the Utah State Office of Education.

Further, three Title I schools are being honored for their efforts in closing the achievement gap between ethnic minority students and the student population as a whole.

To be recognized with a Utah Title I High Performing School Award, a school must achieve adequate yearly progress as measured in the federal No Child Left Behind program in both language arts and math for at least two consecutive years. The school also must achieve at or above the state level on language arts and math tests; and be nominated by the school's district superintendent or charter school leader.

To be recognized with a Utah Closing the Achievement Gap Title I School Award, a school must achieve adequate yearly progress as measured in the federal No Child Left Behind program in both language arts and math for two consecutive years; must reduce by at least 50 percent the achievement gap between disaggregated student groups and the whole school in language arts and math; and be nominated by the school's district superintendent or charter school leader.
