Somalia: 5 pirates drown

MOGADISHU — Five of the pirates who hijacked a Saudi supertanker drowned with their share of a $3 million ransom, a relative said Saturday, the day after the bundle of cash was apparently dropped by parachute onto the deck of the ship.

The Sirius Star and its 25 crew sailed safely away Friday at the end of a two-month standoff in the Gulf of Aden, where pirates attacked over 100 ships last year. Hundreds more kidnapped sailors remain in the hands of pirates.

The drowned pirates' boat overturned in rough seas, and family members were still looking for four missing bodies, said Daud Nure, another pirate who knew the men involved.

Argentina: 4th climber dies

BUENOS AIRES — An Argentine official is identifying the fourth climber to die in a week on Aconcagua mountain as a 42-year-old Briton.

Aconcagua Park chief Pablo Perello says the man apparently suffered a heart attack just steps from the summit on Friday. An Italian climber and an Argentine guide died earlier this week on the Andean mountain after being caught in a blizzard Wednesday. A German man also perished on Jan. 3 while climbing the 22,841-foot mountain, the highest in the Americas.

Costa Rica: Quake toll rises

VARA BLANCA DE ALAJUELA — Searchers found more bodies Saturday in a restaurant buried under fallen earth, bringing the death toll to 16 as helicopters ferried residents and tourists out of a quake-stricken region in Costa Rica, the Red Cross said.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake caused a hillside to collapse near the town of Vara Blanca de Alajuela on Thursday, damaging 6 miles of road and sending rocks and earth tumbling down on passing cars. Many of the dead were trapped inside vehicles, while others were found inside a small restaurant, Red Cross officials said.

England: Prince Harry apologizes

LONDON — Britain's Prince Harry issued a public apology Saturday after a British newspaper published video footage of him using offensive and racist language.

The News of The World reported that Harry, third in line to the British throne, used offensive terms to refer to people from Pakistan and people of Arab descent. Harry, who is an army lieutenant in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, is purported to have made the remarks in 2006 in an airport departure lounge as soldiers waited to travel to Cyprus for training exercises.
