KANSAS CITY, Mo. Davis Baker and Tyler Quinney scored 24 points each Saturday to lead Southern Utah to a 66-50 Summit League win over Missouri-Kansas City.
For the Thunderbirds (5-11, 3-2 Summit League) it was their first road win out of nine so far this season. The Kangaroos (5-13, 1-4) lost their fifth straight.
"We had an entire team effort tonight," SUU coach Roger Reid said. "This (UMKC) team is a talented team that can shoot and penetrate but we held them to 31 percent shooting and kept them from penetrating."
Southern Utah was 16-of-18 at the free throw line and hit 24-of-49 from the floor. The Kangaroos hit just 16-of-52 shots.
Southern Utah led 34-32 with 15 minutes to play before outscoring the Kangaroos 32-18 for the rest of the game.
Dane Brumagin led UMKC with 20 points, while Spencer Johnson had a game-high 12 rebounds.
"The way you win games, especially on the road, is to get an entire team effort and that's what we got tonight, particularly on the defensive end," Reid added. "I liked the job we did Dave Marek did on (UMKC leading scorer Dane) Brumagin. Dave did a great job on him, but that was another example of team effort."
John Clifford had 11 rebounds for the Thunderbirds.
"I thought we did a good job rebounding the basketball as well," Reid said. "Tyler (Quinney) had eight rebounds and John (Clifford) had 11. We did a good job particularly in the second half when we had 17 rebounds to their 14 and John had eight of those."
