Utah Utes gymnastics: Tense tenth Utes stumble, still hold off the Bruins
Marsden was also pleased with sophomore Gael Mackie's career-best 9.80 vault and 9.90 bars, and with his freshmen, Stephanie McAllister and Cortni Beers, even though Beers fell leading off bars. Marsden said it perhaps wasn't fair to put her in that spot, and he noted she came back strong on beam. "It's going to take some experimenting with the lineups," he said, as he tries to place his competitors in the most advantageous order.
Beers had 9.70 leading off beam, and McAllister scored 9.725 vaulting and 9.85 on floor.
UCLA coach Valorie Kondos Field was quite happy with her team that had 16 of its 24 routines performed by freshmen and only two routines by upperclassmen because of the club's ongoing injury problems. Senior Kristina Comforte retired this week due to a torn labrum, and Field said she has "four guns that are out." That's three gymnasts hampered following preseason bone-spur surgeries and another recovering from knee problems. However, several will be back soon, and Field added, "It looks like we're back."
