Hard to believe a giant, pink lizard could be overlooked for almost two centuries. But scientists have documented a new, previously undiscovered species, the iguana "rosada" (pink in Spanish), which may be one of the Galapagos Archipelago's oldest. The pink iguanas average 3-5 feet in length.

Canada: Soldier ordered to leave

TORONTO — The first woman soldier to flee the U.S. military for Canada to avoid the Iraq war said Wednesday that Canadian authorities have ordered that she be deported this month along with her husband and their children.

Kimberly Rivera said her requests to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds were rejected.

Rivera, a private first class in the Army based at Fort Carson, Colo., served in Iraq in 2006 and came to Canada the following year after she was ordered to serve another tour there. She could be court-martialed when she returns.

Ghana: President takes office

ACCRA — Ghana's new president took office Wednesday vowing to "heal wounds and unite our dear nation" following a peaceful but tense election that secured the country's status as one of the continent's few stable democracies.

Tens of thousands of people crowded Independence Square for the inauguration of John Atta Mills, the opposition candidate who won the runoff election with 50.23 percent of the vote.

This marked the second time power in Ghana has been transferred from one legitimately elected leader to another.

Guatemala: Quake toll grows

GUATEMALA CITY — The death toll from a landslide in northern Guatemala has risen to 37 after villagers discovered two more bodies.

Rescue crew chief Sergio Cabanas said Wednesday that Aquil Grande residents found the bodies after spotting buzzards flying overhead.

The discovery came after rescuers called off their search Tuesday, citing the danger of falling rock from the weakened mountain.

At least 100 people were in the area when the landslide buried nearly a mile of road on Sunday. At least 50 are still missing.

Hungary: School shooting

BUDAPEST — Police say a masked gunman has shot to death the principal and a teacher at a school in the Budapest neighborhood of Csepel.

Budapest police spokesman Endre Kormos says the unidentified gunman also shot a security guard in the hand in Wednesday evening's attack.

Kormos says the gunman fled, and there was no information on the motive for the attack.
