LOGAN — The Cache County attorney says he is resigning midway through his second four-year term.

George Daines says he is delivering his letter of resignation on Wednesday. Daines, 59, says he will resume his private law practice.

Daines' office last year was apparently the subject a federal probe into alleged improprieties in his office. Word of the probe first surfaced after a defense attorney said the FBI was investigating Daines for subverting a witness in a March 2007 trial.

The FBI would not confirm or deny the investigation, but said two agents had been in Logan conducting interviews.

Daines said in November that federal authorities told him no further investigation was warranted.

Still, Daines asked for an independent inquiry into his handling of the case, which found no wrongdoing.
