Family History Library class series to help with FamilySearch, handwriting

Getting started with family history, FamilySearch and handwriting classes will be offered at the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City.

The getting started series, including "Starting Your Family History," "How to Guess Where to Start," "Research Logs — A Tool for Organizing Your Research" and "Family History on the Internet" is Jan. 10, 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

On Jan. 17, the Family History Library is offering an all-day series of classes on FamilySearch indexing series, including classes on "How To Do Indexing," and "Q and A for Arbitrators and Administrators." Classes will run from noon to 4 p.m.

On Jan. 31, the series of classes on handwriting includes "Early American Handwriting," "Older English Handwriting," and "Germanic Scandinavian Gothic Handwriting." Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The library is west of Temple Square on West Temple between North Temple and South Temple Streets in downtown Salt Lake City. Free family history classes at BYU

PROVO — Free family history classes, from basics to submitting names to the temple, will be available at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library on the second and fourth Sunday of each month starting in January 2009.

Classes, which are taught by family history instructors, start at 3 p.m. and the last class begins at 6 p.m. The family history library will be open 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays and family history service missionaries will be available.

Dozens of classes are offered quarterly, including family history basics, organizing, computers, research helps, U.S. research, international research, temple submission and training for consultants. A schedule is available at lib.byu.edu/fslab and click on "Sunday Classes" or call 801-422-6200. Free parking is available at the BYU Museum of Art. Computers and training are available for FamilySearch indexing also on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Units needing group training are encouraged to provide their own instructors.
