8 Utahns receive Governor's Medal

Eight Utahns were named recipients of the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology advancement during the past year:

• Mario R. Capecchi, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, is a distinguished professor of human genetics and biology at the University of Utah's Eccles Institute of Human Genetics.

• Brent L. Adams, Dusenberry professor of engineering at Brigham Young University, is highly respected for his work on microstructure-property relationships involving texture, grain boundaries, and dislocations.

• H. DeWayne Ashmead is cited for his collaborating research at Albion Laboratories Inc. with his father, the late Harvey Ashmead.

• David Chapman is recognized as a researcher, teacher and innovative academic leader. He is known for his research in measuring and interpreting thermal aspects of geological processes including global warming.

• David Wakefield is the only certified firearms and toolmarks examiner in the state. He is currently working for the state Department of Public Safety.

• Vickie Ahlstrom, Sego Lily Elementary in Alpine District, teaches hands-on science, integrating it with math, art, social studies and language arts.

• Lee Siegel is a science news specialist for the University of Utah's public relations office, providing local, national and international news organizations with releases, tips and background information on scientific research.

• Bonnie Bourgeous is an international baccalaureate and AP biology teacher at Clearfield High School in the Davis School District.
