BYU's coaching staff appears to be standing pat

LAS VEGAS — Bronco Mendenhall's staff hasn't shuffled around since Jeff Grimes left for Colorado two seasons ago, and it might not shift this coming year, either, the Cougars' camp claimed upon arriving in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Mendenhall told reporters several of his staff members had been contacted about other jobs, but none are expected to make a move, if at all, until the bowl season ends. Even then, with all the changes going on — including three head coaching changes in the conference — anything can happen.

If I were to bet — and this is certainly the town to do it — I'd say Mendenhall's staff stays pat for another year.

So far, we know defensive coordinator Jaime Hill had his agent test the waters for the San Diego State job, which was just filled this past week.

Offensive coordinator Robert Anae's name popped up in a name-dropping exercise by the media when Brent Guy left Utah State, but nobody officially inquired about his interest in leaving BYU.

Quarterback coach Brandon Doman did receive inquiries.

And while media folks were very liberal in throwing around the name of D-line coach Steve Kaufusi, none of those rumors came from him, and he was never considered by Utah for its D-coordinator job. He may not have been interested if asked.

Anae said every coach who is ambitious dreams of coaching the winning Super Bowl team, but his resume never got sent anywhere.

Doman did receive inquiries and he listened. None piqued his interest enough to change jobs. For now.

Doman, who said BYU's Monday practice was as good as the Cougars have had "in some time," confirmed some suitors came calling him the past few weeks. He did not reveal who they were.

"I've had some inquiries where people have asked of my interest in leaving," Doman said.

"But for now, none of them holds enough interest for me. To say I'm not going to pursue those inquiries as they come wouldn't be smart, either. But for now, it's been a good exercise for me to have some phone calls," he said.

"I've gone over some of the things that are important to me, some of my goals, and I've come back even more determined and more sold on the cause of BYU. It's pretty hard to sell me on BYU more than I am sold.

"For right now, I'm a BYU Cougar," Doman said.

Doman admitted that he would love to be a coordinator and a head coach some day.
