WEBER COUNTY — Police still don't know why a 74-year-old driver drifted across several lanes of traffic and into an oncoming Ford Expedition Saturday night, causing an accident that sent four people to the hospital.

Just after 9:45 p.m., police say a man driving a 1996 Chevy Astro was traveling southbound on U.S. 89 around 6400 South in Uintah when he crossed over into the path of a northbound car with four people in it, said Weber County Sheriff 's Lt. Philip Howell.

The Expedition's driver swerved a bit, avoiding a full head-on collision, but the side-swipe impact caused the SUV to roll at least once, Howell said.

Three of the occupants, a husband and wife in their late 40s and their teenage daughter, of Ogden, were taken to McKay-Dee Hospital with lacerations and possible head injuries and were in stable condition, Howell said.

A fourth relative, a man in his 80s, was not injured.

Police are still investigating if seat belts were worn, Howell said.

The elderly driver of the Astro, believed to be from Montpelier, Idaho, was transported in critical condition, and doctors are still conducting an evaluation to see if the accident was caused by some type of medical condition, Howell said.

The elderly driver just avoided a railroad overpass support column when he changed lanes, Howell said.

Deputies closed the road to one lane for several hours while they investigated the accident. The road was opened to all four lanes around 11 p.m., Howell said.
