Parents, family friend die in head-on collision
Curtis and Tami Andersen, both 28, of Nibley, died during a head-on collision with the driver of a Chevy truck, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Plank said Saturday morning. The Andersens' 1-year-old boy was "pretty much unscathed," and their 5-year-old daughter suffered a fractured femur and scrapes, Plank said.
Hannah Roach, 9, of Hyrum, was a passenger in the Andersens' Jeep Cherokee and also died in the collision. Everyone in the Jeep was wearing seat belts, Plank said.
UHP investigators believe, based on witness statements, that the 18-year-old Brigham City driver of the Chevy was fatigued or actually fell asleep while driving southbound Friday on U.S. 89 around 6:50 p.m. Plank said the truck veered into the northbound lane and struck the Jeep head-on.
The driver of the Chevy is a student at Utah State University. Plank said he received facial lacerations.
The Andersens' 5-year-old daughter was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City. Plank said grandparents were caring for the toddler.
