The economic downturn is hitting the local theater community, beyond the typical struggle of filling seats.

Earlier this week, Salt Lake Acting Company, one of only a few professional theaters in the Valley, began a restructuring that included layoffs.

"We're not in any kind of financial crisis, but it is time to be prudent," said Anne Stewart Mark, president of the board of trustees. "All arts organizations are being affected by the current financial climate and we wanted to act responsibly with our eye on the future." she said.

That reduction led to the dismissal of David Chambers, managing director; Mike Dorrell, dramaturg; David Mong, media relations; and Mary Cranney, director of marketing.

With duties reassigned, the staff moves forward with company founder Nancy Borgenicht as interim executive producer.

"Streamlining the staff was taken by mutual agreement in connection with a restructuring of SLAC and a related reduction in workforce," Stewart said.
