College basketball: SUU opens conference with victory

CEDAR CITY — Tyler Quinney scored a career-high 35 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Southern Utah to a Summit League-opening 82-66 win over Oakland University Tuesday night.

Oakland (3-5) has been on the road for 15 straight days and has not played a home game this season.

Quinney knocked down 11-of-16 shots and 13-of-15 free throws to lead the Thunderbirds (2-4).

Davis Baker chipped in 22 points with five rebounds and a pair of steals for the Thunderbirds.

Dave Marek led the Thunderbirds with a season-high six assists, while Cory Davis came off the bench to dish out nine dimes and Mike Josserand had four despite being limited to 19 minutes because of foul trouble.

NO. 18 MEMPHIS 100, MARIST 61: At Memphis, Tenn., Shawn Taggart had 21 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks and freshman Tyreke Evans added 24 points for Memphis.

OHIO ST. 73, NO. 21 MIAMI 68: At Coral Gables, Fla., Ohio State erased a 14-point second-half deficit, mounting the comeback after the ejection of Miami scoring leader Jack McClinton.

NO. 23 FLORIDA 73, FLORIDA A&M 58: At Gainesville, Fla., Nick Calathes had 16 points, five rebounds and seven assists and Chandler Parsons added 15 points for Florida.

NO. 25 MARQUETTE 81, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 67: At Milwaukee, Wesley Matthews scored 18 points and Marquette bounced back from its first loss of the season.
