Arsenal mulls bid for Barcelona's Toure, Sun says
The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers.
Arsenal mulling Toure move
Arsenal may bid 6 million pounds ($8.9 million) for Barcelona and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure in the January transfer window, the Sun reported. Yaya's older brother, Kolo, already plays for the London club.Yaya Toure, 25, had a tryout with Arsenal three years ago. After failing to secure a permanent move to the Premier League club, Yaya went to Barcelona, where he has now fallen out of favor.
Robinho verbally attacks teammates
Robinho has criticized his Manchester City teammates for not having the right mentality, the Sun reported."City have good players but the mentality of a small side," the Brazilian told broadcaster Setanta last night, the paper said. "What they lack is the mentality of champions." He went on to say: "At Real Madrid, I learnt a will to win."
City is two points above the drop zone following last weekend's loss to Manchester United. Robinho said he would sign Brazilians Kaka and Ronaldo if he were in charge.
Larsson to Everton?
Larsson is playing for Helsingborgs. He enjoyed a 10-week loan spell at Manchester United in the 2006-2007 season during which he scored three goals in 13 matches. Larsson, who scored 242 goals during a seven-year stint at Celtic, would be available from January because the Swedish soccer season will be finished by then.
Chelsea, Inter clash
Didier Drogba is at the center of a clash between Inter Milan and former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Chelsea Chief Executive Officer Peter Kenyon, the Sun reported.Media reports said the Ivory Coast striker and Chelsea player had been in secret talks with Inter Milans Marco Branca about a move to Italy.
"It is natural to think about a player joining a club where the coach is like a father to him," the paper quoted Mourinho as saying. Kenyon insisted Drogba isn't going anywhere. "Players will only leave Chelsea when we let them," the Sun quoted him as saying.
West Ham dismisses three offers
West Ham's Icelandic owners have dismissed three bids to buy out the club because none of them matched the asking price of 120 million pounds, the Daily Mirror reported.Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson bought the club for 85 million pounds two years ago and invested another 30 million pounds. He lost 230 million pounds in the financial crisis when Icelandic bank Landsbanki, in which he holds a 45 percent stake, was taken over by the government, the paper said.
Any buyers would have to take on the clubs debt, which is estimated at about 50 million pounds. Gudmundsson is also keen to sell the club in light of a 30 million-pound claim for damages from Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair.
