ST. GEORGE — For maestro Gary Caldwell, the 2008-2009 Southern Utah Southwest Symphony Orchestra season started on a high note.

It's Caldwell's 20th with a baton in hand.

The St. George-based symphony is a volunteer orchestra whose members juggle playing time with work and family life.

Caldwell juggles too. His full-time job is as the director of bands for Dixie State College. During the summer months, he also leads the Tuachan theater orchestra.

Ferron Holt, a founding member of the orchestra, says Caldwell's talent has helped orchestra members improve their skills both as musicians and performers.

Caldwell says his work with the orchestra is hard, but fulfilling. He says he has no plans to retire.
