SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Weber State may not have enjoyed its historic win on Saturday night without the play of receiver Tim Toone, who had a landmark night of his own in the Wildcats' 49-35 win over Cal Poly.
Toone became Weber State's all-time leader in touchdown receptions when he hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike from quarterback Cameron Higgins late in the second quarter. Toone got free on a busted coverage, as there wasn't a Cal Poly defender within 5 yards of him when he made the grab, and he easily ran into the end zone.
Toone now has 19 career touchdown receptions, beating the old mark of 18 held by former Wildcat Wade Orton. Toone also had a career-high 199 receiving yards on 10 receptions against the Mustangs.
"Tim is the best receiver in the country in my opinion," said running back Trevyn Smith. "If we can throw the ball, and they're (opposing defenses) stopping the run, it's great. No one runs a better fade route than that Tim. I have all the faith in the world in that guy."
SLOPPY DALLY: Cal Poly quarterback Jonathan Dally entered Saturday's FCS playoff game with just one interception the entire season. He padded that total against the Wildcats.
Dally threw four picks although one wasn't his fault. He saw a decent pass slip out of the hands of receiver Tre'dale Tolver, and it bounced perfectly to safety Scotty Goodloe in the second quarter. Dally threw three other interceptions that would be considered his fault.
The Mustangs' entire offense was off in important stretches of the game. They entered Saturday's game with three turnovers this season, and then had a total of five against the Wildcats.
GRUDE MATCH: Weber State's victory sets up a Big Sky grudge match with Montana, as the Wildcats travel to play the Grizzlies in the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals next Saturday. Both teams feel like they owe the other something, as Weber State was not awarded a top four seed in the FCS playoffs, but Montana got one despite losing to the Wildcats earlier this season. Montana, of course, wants some payback for its humbling 45-28 defeat in Ogden.
"We feel like we have something to prove," said Weber State cornerback Josh Morris. "It's going to be a great atmosphere."
EXTRA POINTS: One area Cal Poly had an advantage over Weber State on Saturday was in penalties. The Mustangs did not get flagged for one infraction, while the Wildcats had seven penalties for 58 yards ... Senior Brendon Doyle, the Wildcats' "Wildcat" quarterback, threw his first touchdown of the season. He completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cody Nakamura in the third quarter. Cal Poly receiver Ramses Barden, who had six catches for 108 yards and two scores, had his 16th career 100-yard receiving game. He also has 50 career touchdowns.
