SOUTH SALT LAKE — Two golfers used their cart to chase down an underwear-sporting, would-be robber Monday afternoon after he tried to rob a shop at knife point, police said.

According to a police report, the knife-brandishing 48-year-old man entered the golf shop at Golf in the Round at 600 W. 3300 South, around 4 p.m. At first the clerk thought the man was wearing a ski mask, but it turned out to be a pair of men's underwear.

The man demanded money and the clerk retorted, "You gotta be kidding." The man insisted, and the clerk tried to disarm the man. In the struggle, the knife broke at the hilt, and the man ran out of the store.

The clerk told a couple of nearby golf shop patrons the man tried to rob him. The two customers chased the man down using their golf cart and detained him until police arrived.

The man was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery. The clerk suffered minor cuts to his hand in the altercation and drove himself to the hospital.
