Man killed after car crashes into pole

A fatal traffic accident in Salt Lake City early Sunday remains under investigation by detectives.

A vehicle traveling at an extremely high rate of speed on 1000 North, ran through the red light at Redwood Road and then hit the traffic pole without braking, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Fred Ross.

Joe Saldana, 23, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was declared dead at the scene. The cause of the accident was still being investigated.

Drugs and alcohol were found in the vehicle, Ross said. Toxicology tests were performed on the victim. Those test results won't be known for about eight weeks.
