Argentina: Suicide televised
BUENOS AIRES An ex-Argentine police commander committed suicide in front of rolling television cameras as he was about to be arrested for alleged human rights violations during the country's dictatorship.
"Maria, goodbye," Mario Ferreyra said to his wife before lifting the .45-caliber revolver and shooting himself in the temple. Ferreyra, 63, took his life on Friday as national authorities arrived at his home to arrest him on charges in connection with the disappearance, torture and death of dissidents during Argentina's 1976-83 dictatorship.
Canada: Meteor streaks
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan Scientists say they hope to find remnants of a meteor that brilliantly lit up the sky before falling to earth in western Canada.
University of Calgary planetary scientist Alan Hildebrand called it one of the largest meteors visible in the country in the last decade. Widely broadcast video images showed what appeared to be a speeding fireball Thursday night over Saskatoon that became larger and brighter before disappearing as it neared the ground.
Guatemala: 5 decapitated
GUATEMALA CITY A prison fight in Guatemala has left seven inmates dead, including five who were decapitated.
National prisons systems spokesman Rudy Esquivel says authorities found the five heads after the fight in the Pavoncito prison in Guatemala City. He says two other inmates died in a hospital of gunshot wounds. Esquivel says the Saturday morning fight erupted because inmates were angry over the transfer of a group of alleged gang members from another prison.
India: Dalai Lama's warning
DHARMSALA The Dalai Lama is warning Tibetan exiles of possible failure within the next two decades if leaders are not prudent in their plans.
The Tibetan spiritual leader says, "the next twenty years, if we are not careful, if we are not prudent in our plans there is a great danger. It could lead to the danger of failure." The Dalai Lama spoke Sunday to more than 500 delegates gathered in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala for a rare meeting of Tibetan exiles.

JAKARTA A powerful earthquake struck the waters off western Indonesia late Saturday, but it did not trigger a tsunami and there were no initial reports of injuries or damage.
