5A high school football championship: Alta rallies for title

One year later, a familiar result helped Alta stay on top of 5A.

Facing Bingham at Rice-Eccles Stadium for the third consecutive season, the Hawks rallied behind two fourth quarter touchdowns by Ammon Olsen to defeat the Miners 21-17 to claim their second consecutive 5A championship on Friday night.

Olsen found Seth Becerra for a 15-yard pass to make it 17-14 and then ran it in from two yards out to put Alta ahead with 33.3 seconds left. The senior quarterback passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hawks.

Alta also beat Bingham 21-17 to knock the Miners out of the semifinal round a year ago. And the Hawks avenged a 21-19 title game loss to Bingham in 2006 as well.

Alta jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Olsen threw his first touchdown pass - a 38-yard strike to Skyler Mayne - on the Hawks' opening drive. Bingham responded by running off 17 unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead.

Harvey Langi - who had 99 yards on 31 carries - capped off the scoring for the Miners on a 1-yard run with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter.
