MIDVALE The City Council here enacted a moratorium on food vending carts and other itinerant merchants during its regular meeting Tuesday.
The council proposed the moratorium so it could take time to consider changes to city rules about taco carts and similar businesses, said Midvale assistant city administrator Phillip Hill.
Midvale's move toward changing its standards follows in the footsteps of West Valley City, which enacted an ordinance that effectively banned new taco carts earlier this year. That controversial move was called racist by some but defended as progress toward a cleaner community by the council.
The Midvale council may discuss the taco stand issue during a study meeting in mid-December, Hill said.
City officials have become concerned with issues such as the cleanliness and aesthetics of the food stands. The council may decide to ban new stands or enact spacing requirements and business license restrictions, Hill said.
