As an example, the doctor points out that over the course of a year the clinic will see somewhere between 120 and 150 pregnant mothers, assisting them with their prenatal care.

"If you have one mom who doesn't get prenatal care and has a baby who needs extra care because of that, that can cost the system hundreds of thousands of dollars," he explains. "If we can prevent just one of those, we're doing a great service, and not only as it applies to the health of that mother and baby, but also as a financial component of the system.

It's a win-win on every level I can think of."

With that as his rallying cry, Hanrahan will join other People's Clinic supporters tonight at Park City's new Jewish meeting place, Temple Har Shalom, for their yearly fundraiser. As a grassroots enterprise, private donations are the clinic's lifeline. A number of entertainment acts are booked and refreshments will be served, along with the statistics that started this column.

Demand for care is up these days, and so is demand for donations.
