WSU basketball: Miami (Ohio) holds off Weber State 70-66

LOS ANGELES — Kenny Hayes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining and Miami (Ohio) opened its season by holding off Weber State 70-66 on Wednesday night in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic.

Hayes, whose basket snapped a 66-all tie, finished with 24 points. Tyler Dierkers and Michael Bramos added 13 points each as the RedHawks (1-0) gave coach Charlie Coles his 300th career victory. Miami scored 20 points off Weber State's 21 turnovers.

Kellen McCoy led Weber State (0-1) with 16 points and Kyle Bullinger added 13.

The RedHawks play either No. 4 UCLA or Prairie View on Thursday night with a semifinal berth at New York's Madison Square Garden on the line.
