DVD releases include some documentaries

The following DVDs will be released Tuesday, unless otherwise noted:

• "Encounters at the End of the World" (Image Entertainment, $27.98) — *** 1/2 — Werner Herzog's peculiar but fascinating documentary about Antarctica broaches deep subjects.

Special features: Two-disc release includes behind-the-scenes minifeatures ("Above the Ice," "Below the Ice") and filmmaker interview.

• "Garden Party" (Lionsgate, $27.98) — Filmmaker Jason Freedland's comedy-drama follows several teens and twentysomethings trying to survive in Los Angeles. Willa Holland stars.

• "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson" (Magnolia, $26.98) — ** — The style of filmmaking in this documentary about the late "gonzo journalist" is surprisingly tame.

R (violence, drugs, profanity, nudity, vulgarity, sex, rape, slurs) —Jeff Vice

• "Mister Lonely" (IFC Films, $19.98) — Comedy-drama examining the relationship between celebrity impersonators (played by Diego Luna and Samantha Morton).

Not rated, probable PG-13 (profanity, vulgarity, slurs)

• "Priceless" (First Look, $28.98) — ** 1/2 — The always charming Audrey Tautou makes this sometimes creaky, comic creation work better than it should. French with subtitles.

PG-13 (profanity, vulgarity, brief sex, brief partial nudity, slurs) —Jeff Vice

• "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" (Warner, $28.98) — ** 1/2 —This second installment feels a little stale and forced, though there are a couple of charming performances.

Special features: "Limited gift set" ($38.98) includes both the first and second films.

PG-13 (vulgarity, profanity, brief sex, nude art, brief drugs) —Jeff Vice

• "Tropic Thunder" (Paramount, $29.98) — ** — Ben Stiller's spoof of Hollywood action films repeats the same five jokes so many times they become painfully unfunny.

Special features: Unrated "director's cut" ($34.98, two discs) includes additional footage cut from the theatrical release and behind-the-scenes mini-features.
