NORTH SALT LAKE — An officer injured after crashing his patrol car during a police pursuit died Friday night.

North Salt Lake officer Charlie Skinner, 30, suffered severe head injuries while pursuing a car-thief suspect during a chase Monday in Bountiful. Police said Skinner's patrol car slid on rain-soaked roads and slammed into the concrete base of a restaurant sign.

"This has been pretty traumatic for the department," said North Salt Lake Police Sgt. Mitch Gwilliam. "We had an officer die doing the work he said he'd do."

Gwilliam said it is difficult for the other officers to return home to their wives and kids following such a tragedy, knowing that another officer can't.

The man police officers were pursuing later rolled his vehicle in Salt Lake City. He was not seriously injured and is in the custody of state corrections officers for a series of warrants and a probation violation.

A bank account to help Skinner's family with medical and other costs has been set up at Zions Bank in the officer's name, Gwilliam said.
