PROVO The BYU women's basketball team began its preseason Wednesday with a 79-51 victory in an exhibition game against Western Oregon.
It was nice for the first game, BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. We played well sometimes and sometimes we played like we didn't know what we were doing, but that's what happens when you have a young team.
Freshman Dani Peterson led all scorers with 12 points with fellow freshman Kristen Riley toping the rebound category with nine boards. Sophomore guard Mindy Nielson tallied 11 points in the contest .
Judkins showcased the depth of his young Cougar team, allowing every player time on the court. Fourteen of the 18 BYU players contributed to the win on the scoring side.
This game was a good opportunity to let the players play, Judkins said.
The team will play another exhibition contest Saturday against instate foe Dixie State in the Marriot Center at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
