Veterans are family to couple

"If I hadn't married Marion years ago, I'd probably need this program myself," says Al, who still has nightmares related to post-traumatic stress disorder from his time in Vietnam. "The war doesn't end when you come home. I'm for anything we can do to keep these guys off the streets."

Every veteran who has unpacked his bag at the Apps' home has a sad story or two.

Frank, a truck driver in Vietnam, lived on the streets of Dallas for four years before ending up at a Salt Lake shelter with his bedroll and a small sack of clothes. After six years in the Navy, Michael developed severe depression and suffered a mental breakdown, losing everything, including his wife of 31 years.

"They've endured more than you can imagine," says Marion, "but they haven't given up. They're determined to make the most of life. Having them in our home isn't a burden — it's a blessing."

Anyone interested in the veterans' residential care program can call 582-1565, ext. 2321.
