MormonTimes.com Media Observer: Democracy, not irony, at play in Proposition 8 balloting
If you read what some commentators wrote before Tuesday's election, the LDS Church and its members' support of California's Proposition 8 was "ironic." For me the irony arguments show that the pundits don't understand Mormons and the American political process.
A blogger at Newsweek-Washington Post felt it ironic that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints once supported polygamy and now supported traditional marriage between one man and one woman. For us Mormons, the blogger could have just as well asserted that he found it ironic that Catholics support peace because Catholics once supported the Crusades.
