And as more Mexicans come north, the folklore and art associated with the Day of the Dead gain more favor here. Skulls and skeletons have become a motif for sculptures and trinkets. Some of the traditional dishes served on the Day of the Dead such as "mole" sauce made from chiles and chocolate are a staple in local Mexican restaurants.
In the end, Mexico's Day of the Dead has evolved and taken hold. For years the celebrations in Mexico were used as colorful, exotic backdrops for thriller movies. Now, as more Mexicans immigrate, Americans are beginning to see the subtle elements of the day the meaning behind the masks, songs and ethnic food.
In short, Americans are beginning to understand and appreciate the Day of the Dead and by extension appreciate the many people born in Mexico who have become our neighbors, friends and co-workers on this side of the "Tortilla Curtain."
