The Courage Campaign of California delivered a petition to the LDS Church Administration Building Friday afternoon asking The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints to stop funding any support of Proposition 8.
The documents with 17,345 signatures from California residents were addressed to church President Thomas S. Monson, according to Will Carlson, a Utahn who helped with the delivery effort. The signatures are from California residents in general, not church members.
Proposition 8 is a Nov. 4 ballot proposition that would ban same-sex marriage in California. The proposition would overturn the California Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage.
The Courage Campaign is an online organizing network with nearly 100,000 members that says it empowers grass-roots and netroots activists to try to create a new era for progressive politics in California.
The LDS Church's public affairs personnel had no comment on the delivery of signatures.
