It appears burglars broke into the campaign office of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bob Springmeyer early Sunday morning and made off with a wireless modem and portable telephone.
Springmeyer's campaign spokesman, Patrick Thronson, said the break-in occurred Sunday morning.
A resident at New Grand Hotel Apartments noticed shattered glass in the door as he passed the office at 11 E. 400 North around 8 a.m. The door had been undamaged when the resident passed by earlier, around 6 a.m.
"It's disturbing to us that this sort of incident occurred only nine days before the election," said Springmeyer's spokesman, Patrick Thronson.
The thief smashed the glass with a baseball-size rock. The wireless modem and portable phone were valued at about $130, Thronson said.
It must have been a quick heist because two computers and some petty cash were left behind. Thronson said the staff had been in the habit of taking their computers home at night. The phone was replaced with one from Springmeyer's home, and Pete Ashdown, CEO of Internet provider XMission, has loaned the campaign a modem.
Police say they have no suspects.
